Omega-3 fatty acids don't seem to impact mild depression particularly, but after reviewing studies that used 1,000 mg to 6,000 mg of EPA and DHA, the studies with a 60 percent or greater concentration of EPA showed significant improvements in moderate and major depression. The International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research issued guidelines in 2019 stating that in adults with major depressive disorder omega-3 supplements can accelerate the effects of an antidepressant when started at the same time as the antidepressant, as well as enhance the effects of an antidepressant when the results have been inadequate. The supplement recommendations are 1 to 2 grams (1000-2000 IU) per day for at least 8 weeks of either 100 percent EPA or a combination of EPA and DHA, where the ratio is 2:1.
